MIGRAINE: DOES IT EXIST IN CHILDREN?;

Migraine is not at all uncommon in childhood. About 101% of adults have migraines, and half of them started having migraines as children. As in adults, migraines in children can be quite bothersome. However, there are some differences. Fewer children than adults report auras or other neurological symptoms that often precede and accompany migraines. Children are also more likely to have headaches all over their head or on both sides, and their migraines may be much shorter.

Migraine in children – is it different?;

The most characteristic features of migraine are the same in adults and children. Migraines are followed by a desire to sleep. Sometimes, when migraines begin in early childhood, the attacks are not primarily headaches, but other types of symptoms such as vomiting or abdominal pain or hallucinations or problems with balance and walking. Later, many of these children will begin to have more typical migraine pain that resembles that of adults.

In most cases, migraine is diagnosed clinically, based on history and a careful physical examination. Imaging with CT or MRI is not required unless there are signs that suggest a different diagnosis is possible.

Treating childhood migraine

The most important part of treating childhood migraines is prevention. Many children with migraines have identifiable migraine triggers that can be avoided. These may include disrupted sleep or hunger, bright light, or stress.

Regular healthy lifestyle habits, including good nutrition, sleep, avoiding long hours of screen time on mobile phones or tablets, exercise, and stress-reducing hobbies, can go a long way in preventing many migraines.

After prevention strategies, all migraine sufferers need an action plan: what to do when a migraine starts. Whatever treatment is chosen, it will work best if it is started soon, as soon as possible after the migraine begins, before the headache becomes severe. Some over-the-counter medications work well, such as ibuprofen.

There are also prescription migraine medications approved for children. Migraine treatment, after medication, should also include encouraging the child to rest in a quiet, dark place.
