Migraine is a neurological condition estimated to affect more than 12% of the general population, although its incidence is 3 times higher in women. Moreover, studies have shown that 5% of the children suffer from migraines. The symptoms, both in adults and children, can be strong and intense headaches, with a tendency to vomit, as well as high sensitivity to light, sound and smells, while in women migraines can also be associated with their period. Migraine affects the patients’ quality of life severely and is NOT a simple headache; it is a condition. There are patients that spend years of their lives with the fear of the next crisis of migraine; they cannot enjoy their family and social life and they face problems in their professional life too, due to migraine. Quite often, these patients use (and abuse) painkillers on a daily basis. Many patients feel desperate because the problem is chronic and their relatives and physicians may not realize what they are going through.
The first steps in the office are to both understand the extent of the migraine patient's problem, but also to make the patient understand that there are medications (new and old) that can reduce both frequency and intensity of the headache and that he should stop abusing the painkillers. This is how we divide migraine medications into special medications (triptans, ditans, gepants) that are given when the patient is in pain or has nausea and vomiting, and into medications that act prophylactically and must be taken every day by the patient. In addition, there are preventive medications for migraine such as botulinum toxin type A (the well-known Botox - you can see a video by clicking here) which is done by a specialized neurologist every three months or the monoclonal antibodies which the patient does himself usually once a month.
The message for all the people suffering from migraine is that their condition is not a dead end and that it is worth trying a special treatment systematically, regardless of how advanced the condition is and no matter how desperate they may feel. Besides, a lot of new and effective medicines for migraine have been launched in recent years.
